FERNÁNDEZ DÁVILA

Organ details

History

The magnificent twin organs of the Cathedral are build by Leonardo Fernández Dávila in the mid-18th century, masterpieces of Spanish late baroque organ building. The Evangile organ unfortunately preserves only the case and the prospect pipe work from the original instrument, but the Epistle organ has been quite well preserved and is now being restored by organ builder Joaquín Lois. The works are expected to be completed in 2024. With its double facade and three keyboards (Órgano Mayor, Cadereta de espalda, Cadereta de eco) this instrument represents the evolution and innovations of the Spanish organ building of that time, featuring some new stops such as the 12-14 ranks mixture (defined as a “lleno flamenco” - flemish plenum - by Fernández Dávila), the first undulating double rank Flauta Travesera, the Trompeta Universal of 32' for the right hand and the Clarin Imperial en quinta (5 1/3') in chamade.
