Freiberg was the center of organ building in Saxony for more than 100 years. The famous organ builder Gottfried Silbermann (1683–1753) had his workshop in what is today called the Silbermann House, situated next to Freiberg castle and the Cathedral of St. Mary. Today, an exhibition attracts visitors to this historical building and teaches them about Silbermann, his pupils and his style of organ building.
Between 1714 and 1735, Silbermann completed five organs in Freiberg.
Four of these have survived to the present day and they reflect the magnificent craftsmanship of one of the most important organ builders of the Baroque era.
