The Silver City of Freiberg hosts the European organ world online meetup. On June 6th, 7pm, the association ”ECHO – European Cities of Historical Organs“ is presenting a unique concert format. Albrecht Koch, organist of Freiberg’s Cathedral of St. Mary and ECHO Artistic Director, succeeded in organising a common concert at all famous historical organs from all nine ECHO cities. Next to the great organ by Gottfried Silbermann in Freiberg's Cathedral of St. Mary 13 other organs from Mafra (Portugal), Treviso (Italy), Alkmaar (Netherlands), Brussels (Belgium), Toulouse (France), Fribourg (Switzerland), Innsbruck (Austria) and Trondheim (Norway) will sound. Most of the compositions played this evening are exclusive only for this concert. The campaign ”simply saxony!“ („So geht sächsisch.“) of the Saxon State Chancellery supports the concert as a co-producer.
Freiberg is presiding the ECHO-chair 2020 and was supposed to host the annual conference of the association „ECHO – European Cities of Historical Organs“ from June 4th to 7th. Not only concerts and the traditional organ music night of the association "Gottfried-Silbermann-Gesellschaft" were planned, but also an organ camp with young people from all nine ECHO countries. Due to the pandemia the organisers were forced to redesign the event: „We make the best of it", said Albrecht Koch. „It was a big challenge to realise movie productions in all member countries during this time. Due to the countries' wish of a common presentation in the crisis there is an amazing format as a result.“ All member cities will play compositions from Johann Sebastian Bach. His music is famous all over the world and connects cities thousands of kilometres apart during this unique concert. Furthermore, the 11 organists will play a diversified programme with compositions of their countries.
Sven Krüger, mayor of Freiberg and this year’s ECHO-chairman, is looking forward to the concert: „It is unfortunate that Freiberg cannot host the ECHO conference as planned. Fortunately, we can nevertheless experience a concert", is Krüger promoting the concert. „We want to be a virtual host to the world and promote the Silver City's diverse treasures. “ Silver mining for centuries made Saxony rich and brilliant restulting in inventors, craftsmen and entrepreneurs. „Not only the unique Silbermann organs but also our UNESCO World Heritage title "Mining Region Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří“ made Freiberg famous in Europe and all over the world."
The concert (about 90 minutes; free of charge) will be streamed on YouTube and facebook channels of ECHO and „So geht sächsisch.“ on June 6th, 7pm.
