JOĆO VAZ


Born in Lisbon, Joao Vaz finishes his degree in Architecture at the same time as studying music at the Instituto Gregoriano de Lisboa (Department of Advanced Gregorian studies of the Lisbon Higher school of Music) where he graduated in Organ with Antoine Sibertin-Blanc. He studied later in Zaragoza (Spain) with Jose Luis Gonzalez Uriol.

Besides his regular studies (counterpoint, stylistic composition, improvisation, etc.) he attended improvement courses with teachers such as Edouard Souberbielle. His interest in early music led him to work with Joaquim Simoes da Hora as a teacher during the semanas Internacionais de Musica antiga. In 1988 he won 1st National Prize in the Portuguese Youth Music Competition (Higher Organ Class).
He has performed in recitals in Portugal and many other countries, both as a soloist, as well as in colaboration with various soloists or groups , namely the Gulbenkian Orchestra and he made several CD recordings on Portuguese historical Organs.

He is at present Organ teacher in the University of Evora and in the Instituto Gregoriano de Lisboa, and advisor for the restoration of the six organs of the Palace of Mafra Holding, since 1986, the post of organist at the Church of Our Lady of Fatima in Lisbon, he has recently been appointed organist of the famous historic organ of Sao Vicente de Fora.
